4 Influencers Share Why They Went Vegan and Why You Should Too

Veganism. Here's the wikipedia definition for ya: "Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals."

We all know someone who is vegan but maybe you're looking to see if veganism will fit into your life but don't know where to start (after all, it's good for your body and the planet!). You might be curious about the benefits of the lifestyle or want to know why people that choose veganism are so passionate about it.

There's a lot going on in the vegan movement and people gravitate towards veganism for many different reasons. So we've rounded up some of our favorite people in the vegan space and asked them to share some of their knowledge and experiences with veganism with us!

First, we chatted with Kylie, instagram handle @cookingbykylie. Her philosophy focuses on healthy, simple recipes and her feed is filled with decadent photos of her creations (spoiler alert: they're desserts, YES!) that you'd never guess are vegan. Don't go to her page hungry!

Vive: What made you decide to go vegan and how long have you been vegan?

KylieI decided to go vegan because I really wanted to start eating healthier and challenge myself to try and stick to something. I have been vegan for a little over 3 years!

Vive: What are some tips you have for people looking to go vegan?

Kylie: Tips I have for people looking to go vegan is that take it slowly and start switching over to vegan products gradually. Also find vegan alternatives to your favorite non vegan foods to make it easier!

Vive: What is your favorite thing about the vegan lifestyle and/or community that you'd like people to know?

Kylie: My favorite thing about the vegan lifestyle is that I know I helping the environment in a positive way and my food isn’t causing animals to be put through such horrible things.

We also had the privilege of talking to Schyler, aka Ms. Vegan, a carnivore turned herbivore who is helping others make the change easily and deliciously. Her IG is full of mouth-watering photos of her own creations + vegan dishes she eats and where to find them!

Vive: What made you decide to go vegan and how long have you been vegan?

SchylerI have been Vegan for 7 years now. It started out as a challenge. A dear friend of mine is Vegan and she cooked all Vegan meals when I went to visit her. Upon returning home I decided to give it a try. Immediately I felt better. From there I began to get more involved and learn about not only the health benefits but the ethical reasons behind the Vegan lifestyle. And once your learn there is no way to unlearn and go back.

Vive: What are some tips you have for people looking to go vegan?

Schyler: I think it’s important to not be so hard on yourself when trying to go vegan. No one is perfect and although people say it’s so easy to go vegan that’s not true for everyone. Don’t be afraid to reach out. And when eating out don’t be afraid to ask the chef to make a special dish. Sometimes the best dishes I have had are from Non Vegan restaurants.

Vive: What is your favorite thing about the vegan lifestyle and/or community that you'd like people to know?

Schyler: It’s a beautiful feeling knowing that your diet and lifestyle isn’t contributing to the cruelty of any living beings. And knowing that it’s a choice you made makes it that much more incredible.

Next, we had the pleasure of talking with Andrea, or @thefruitgoddesss. Kindness just radiates out of her! This is a girl after our own heart. She travels the world and shares her breathtaking photos along with tips for eating the best vegan food around! Someone's doing life right.

Vive: What made you decide to go vegan and how long have you been vegan?

AndreaSince I was a kid I couldn't understand why we loved our pets but not the other animals. As I grew up I realized it was wrong and I couldn't just love some of them and eat the others. That's why I decided to stop 8 years ago.  I love every living being equally, I always imagine myself hugging them all and it has been the best decision in my life.

Vive: What are some tips you have for people looking to go vegan?

Andrea:  Being vegan is easier than we think. I would recommend starting little by little, eating less meat and adding more veggies to your diet. Try new vegan-friendly cafes, make some fun recipes and educate yourself. Watch a documentary like Earthlings, Cowspiracy, Blackfish or What The Health. Also, I'd suggest visiting an animal sanctuary so you know why you are making this change.

Vive: What is your favorite thing about the vegan lifestyle and/or community that you'd like people to know?

Andrea: I love the peace, kindness and how people work together for a better tomorrow. Being vegan makes me wake up every day thinking how grateful and happy I am. And, vegan food tastes much better, has more flavor and there are thousands of new recipes to try!

Finally, we were lucky enough to speak to Katie or as you might know her better, Chocolate Covered Katie. She's a food blogger that took the internet by storm with her delish plant-based desserts! Her blog is full of healthy, vegan takes on comfort foods and the most drool-worthy desserts.

Vive: What made you decide to go vegan and how long have you been vegan?

Katie: An animal lover even before I went vegan, I often gave money to an organization called Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. One day when I was 14 years old, they sent me something in the mail about animal testing… It was the first time I had ever heard of such a thing, and I was shocked and horrified. I spent hours on the internet, looking up cruelty-free cosmetics.  And it was during this research process that I learned about factory farming. I pretty much went vegetarian on the spot. My two favorite foods were cheese and ice cream, and veganism was definitely NOT a mainstream idea back then; I had absolutely no intention of going vegan, and I thought vegans were crazy. However, a year later my family moved to China, where they eat very little dairy. No longer could I go to Baskin & Robbins every day after school for a chocolate milkshake or Outback Steakhouse for my favorite macaroni and cheese. I was eating vegan by accident… and was feeling better than I ever had in my entire life!

Vive: What are some tips you have for people looking to go vegan?

Katie: Especially when just starting out, there’s no need to overcomplicate things. Find a non-vegan version of your favorite dessert, then follow the recipe using a plant-based milk, oil or Earth Balance for any butter, and substitute ener-g or flax eggs for any eggs called for. Alternatively, just google “recipe for vegan _______,” writing your favorite dessert in the blank, and probably a hundred vegan bloggers will have already come up with vegan versions.

Vive: What is your favorite thing about the vegan lifestyle and/or community that you'd like people to know?

Katie: There are good vegan versions of so many foods now that you really don't feel deprived at all. No matter what you're craving, if it isn't available as a product to buy, chances are you can find a recipe for it online. One of my favorite things about the lifestyle is all the fun new foods and recipes I've tried that I never would have known existed!

There you have it. Thanks again to all these inspiring ladies for sharing their experiences with us!
